Neuroma Injection Facts & Information

The chronic pain condition, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), is progressive and can affect any area of the body. Whether you have a minor injury (sprain or something comparable), or a severe injury such as nerve damage, CRPS can develop.

Neuroma is a condition that frequently develops in patients diagnosed with CRPS. Neuromas are abnormal nerve clusters that can form at the site of a nerve injury. These nerve clusters send abnormal pain signals to the brain causing persistent pain at the site of the injury.

In many instances, these injuries were sustained months or years prior and were relatively minor. It is not clear why these neuromas form but are often seen after an unrelated surgery. Notably, these areas are often sensitive to touch and the skin is markedly warmer in this area.

How Do Neuroma Injections Help?

Neuroma injections (like other anti-inflammatory injections) are used to block the sending of pain signals from these nerve clusters to the brain. The blockage of pain signals may also reduce swelling, skin discoloration, sweating as well as improved mobility.

If a neuroma is identified by physical exam and/or imaging modalities, it can often be re-identified using an ultrasound in our office. Once confirmed, local anesthetic solution with or without steroid is injected around the structure.

How Long Does the Procedure Take?

A neuroma injection is safely performed on an outpatient basis. The procedure typically requires 15 minutes, including preparation time, and is followed by a short period of observed recovery time.

There are no stringent restrictions on activities or work following these injections.

How Often Should This Procedure Be Done?

CRPS is not a degenerative condition – therefore, the procedure may only be needed once to calm the pain. The mixture of anesthetic, saline and anti-inflammatory medicine in the injections allows for sustained pain relief over a long period of time.

Please note that CRPS is, however, a very painful, chronic condition and if left untreated could adversely affect quality of life for a sustained amount of time.

What are the Expected Results?

Neuroma injections have proven to be very successful in relieving pain caused by CRPS symptoms in areas of the body where nerves have been injured.

It’s recommended that you take it easy the day of the procedure, but return to your usual activities the following day. Although initially you might have some soreness at the injection site, the benefit from these injections will typically occur a few days following the procedure.
