Growing up, Dr. Whitney K. Braddy injured his back resulting in episodes of low back pain. “I have always felt like this experience helps me to better understand and treat my patients with chronic pain.”
Dr. Braddy joined the National Spine and Pain Centers in July 2018 after practicing in Massachusetts including academic faculty of anesthesia and pain medicine at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston. Coming back to North Carolina is a homecoming for Dr. Braddy as he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) and a medical degree from East Carolina University School of Medicine.
Upon completing an internship in internal medicine and a residency in anesthesiology at Tulane University, he also earned a Master’s in Business Administration from the New Orleans-based higher education learning institution in 2014. Tulane was also the site for his regional anesthesia fellowship. He completed a pain management fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 2016.
Dr. Braddy notes patient interaction is the most important part of his job. “I sit down with my patients and make sure I understand where they are coming from and how pain is affecting their lives,” he said. “This understanding combined advanced imaging and physical exam helps me design a treatment plan for each individual patient.”
Trained in interventional pain medicine as well as regional anesthesia, Dr. Braddy utilizes x-ray techniques to treat neck and back pain as well as ultrasound techniques to address pain throughout the body.
“Managing pain is too important not to be done correctly,” he said. “I spend a lot of time making sure I am up to date on new research and new treatment options so that I can treat my patients in the safest, most effective way possible. In this way, pain medicine can transform lives. Helping people regain function and get back to living their lives is incredibly rewarding. I feel very fortunate to be a physician and to be able to help others.”
North Carolina is a beloved place for Dr. Braddy to explore including hiking in Asheville and going to the beaches in the Outer Banks. He also loves to support his alma mater UNC and spend time with family and friends.
