About Sudhir Diwan, M.D.

Dr. Sudhir Diwan is a top-rated, highly sought after pain management specialist and serves as the executive director of Manhattan Spine & Pain Medicine. He joined National Spine & Pain Centers through a partnership in late 2013.

Before joining Manhattan Spine & Pain, Dr. Diwan was the director of the Tri-Institutional Pain Fellowship Program and Division of Pain Medicine at Ivy League Weill Medical College of Cornell University for 10 years, where he also served as associate professor of clinical anesthesiology. He also served on the faculty for the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health, the Comprehensive Spine Center, and the Jill Robert IBD Center for Gastrointestinal Health, all at the world renowned New York Presbyterian Hospital.

It was while he was completing a three-year residency in anesthesiology in the early 1990s that Dr. Diwan became fascinated by the treatment of pain, and subsequently completed a pain management fellowship. Dr. Diwan said he finds it challenging that “The definition of pain is different for person to person, and pain is difficult to measure precisely.” Diwan is an energetic physician who says he is motivated by “a passion for helping patients and easing their pain.”

Dr. Diwan is well-known for treating the most complex and challenging cases of chronic pain. His list of publication contributions and television appearances are pages long.

Dr. Diwan has provided his expertise in pain medicine to articles appearing in leading newspapers including The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times, and has made various television appearances including Fox 5’s Good Day New York and Health Headlines on CBS for latest research on radiofrequency lesioning for chronic back pain.

In addition to his busy pain management practice, Dr. Diwan lectures extensively and interacts regularly with experts in the field of pain medicine nationally and internationally. He has been guest speaker for many noteworthy organizations including the American Cancer Society, the American Society of Anesthesiology, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, the World Institute of Pain, and numerous pain specialty societies and congresses in Europe. He is also a regular speaker for the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists on the topic of pain management and management of cancer pain.

 Dr. Diwan is frequently honored as an expert in his field. He was named to New York Magazine’s list of best doctors for five years in a row, including 2013. He was selected by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top doctors in pain management in 2011, 2012 and 2013. He received the “Physician of The Year” honor by the nursing council of The New York Presbyterian Hospital in 2007.
