Reshma Puthottu joined the National Spine & Pain Centers’ offices in Mount Vernon and Reston, Virginia as a certified physician assistant. With experience working as an athletic trainer and emergency room scribe, Puthottu is excited to promote interventional pain management options such as trigger point and joint injections.
Puthottu is skilled in constructing broad differential diagnoses, performing patient histories and physicial exams, and has been commended by predecessors for her efficiency, patient satisfaction, and suturing techniques.
Throughout her education, Puthottu participated in a series of clinical rotations where working knowledge of medical procedures and protocol were taught, as well as hands-on experience with patients in a myriad of settings. She worked with patients in general surgery, family medicine, women’s centers, pediatrics, and many other specific areas of medical expertise.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Tech in human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise, Puthottu worked at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Virginia as an emergency room scribe where she completed physical exams, patient charts, and worked with physicians on differential diagnoses. Wanting to further her career, Puthottu received a certificate in Physician Assistant Studies while simultaneously completing a Masters of Science in Health Sciences from University of Maryland Baltimore.
“I first became attracted to the field of pain management after being exposed to several cases during my time in the ER… being a dancer and tennis player myself, I feel strongly about living a healthy, non-sedentary lifestyle. Chronic pain often prevents this and can lead to even more chronic health issues down the road. I feel it is important to not just mask a person’s pain, but to find the source, target that issue, and hopefully improve a patient’s overall health,” Puthottu stated.
She also feels strongly about patient’s involvement in their treatment plans and healthcare decisions. Since every patient’s pain is unique and requires a specialized treatment plan, Puthottu believes that a patient should be heard and their thoughts should always be considered before creating an effective treatment plan.
Puthottu is fluent in English, Malayalam, and conversational French.
