Having studied psychology as a double major at Rutgers University, Nidhi Sondhi was drawn to pain management during her Anesthesiology residency where she began to understand the debilitating impact chronic pain has on one’s life, both physically and mentally. “Chronic pain has significant effects on one’s entire life. My ultimate goal is to help chronic pain patients regain a sense of normalcy in their lives” she said.
Graduating from the New Jersey-based higher educational institution with a bachelor’s degree in genetics and psychology, Dr. Sondhi would go on to earn her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) School of Osteopathic Medicine, where she was recognized for academic excellence having graduated at the top of her class. Dr. Sondhi completed her residency and interventional chronic pain fellowship at Case Western, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in Ohio.
Pain management “continues to be a growing field of medicine which allows me to be able to offer new minimally-invasive, non-operative treatments to my patients,” she said.
Believing in a multimodal approach, Dr. Sondhi puts together a treatment plan combining medication management, physical rehabilitation and interventional procedures. “Every patient is affected by their pain in different ways, making each patient unique,” she said. “I believe in getting to know each of my patients as individuals and understanding their goals so that we can work together as a team to achieve the best outcome.”
The best part of her job is improving patients’ quality of life by helping them regain abilities and functions that were previously limited by chronic pain.
When not helping patients, Dr. Sondhi enjoys spending time with her family, reading novels, traveling to new destinations, and trying new recipes in the kitchen.
