When meeting with patients, Kelly Riely NP listens to their concerns and encourages them to be actively involved in their health management. “Patients will diagnosis themselves or at least point you in the right direction if you just listen to them,” she said.
Riely joined the National Spine and Pain Centers Mount Vernon office in January 2019. She previously worked as a nurse practitioner at Virginia Hospital Center Physician Group — Primary Care McLean, a registered nurse in radiology at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and a registered nurse in oncology/medical surgical at St. Clair Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.
The Ashton, MD native holds a Masters of Science in Nursing: Family Practitioner degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Villanova University in Villanova, PA.
When starting her career as a nurse practitioner, Riely decided to focus on primary care in order to lay a broad foundation before she picked a speciality. She was later drawn to the pain management field. “I have a lot of empathy for patients with acute or chronic pain and wanted to learn more about this area of medicine as well as help the needs of these patients and overall improve their quality of life,” she said.
Riely has worked with anesthesia/sedation as well as performing MRI, CT and Fluoroscopy as a nurse. “I am excited to get to work with these modalities again,” she said.
When discussing medication management, Riely’s approach is to have a face-to-face discussion with her patients in order to make a joint decision that provides the best individualized medication and treatment plan that is both the safest and most effective. Riely is excited to focus on pain management and actively make a difference in the quality of her patients’ lives.
