Kaitlyn (Kate) Bethune is a certified family nurse practitioner in National Spine & Pain Center’s Arlington (Ballston), VA, office where she works with Dr. Kemesha Delisser to formulate treatment plans, oversee medication management and engage patients in their recovery and healing. She also performs interventional procedures including trigger point injections.
After earning her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Georgetown University, Bethune spent four years as an emergency room nurse at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital. “In the ER, I saw people in pain who were really helpless and in that setting we were often just trying to apply a band-aid to the situation. I wanted to be more a part of finding long-term solutions to their pain,” she recalled.
So she decided to return to Georgetown University to pursue her master’s degree as a family nurse practitioner. Her advance studies in nursing, combined with her days as a bedside nurse, have shaped her care philosophy, which begins first and foremost with listening to her patients and then educating them on the role they will play in their recovery, including how home exercises and physical therapy can build their strength and keep them safe.
“I want to form relationships with my patients so we can establish what our priorities need to be and what we can do to help them get better,” she said. “For some people, that might mean being able to return to doing the sports they like, while for others it might simply mean being able to walk around the block to go to the grocery store. I need to determine what works—and doesn’t work—for each patient.”
In her free time, Kate enjoys cooking, traveling and taking hikes with her husband and her dog.
