Jody Walker is a pharmacist with National Spine & Pain Centers’ Winchester, Virginia office. He has more than 26 years of experience in retail and clinical pharmacy settings, having started his career in 1989 with the Rite Aid Corporation before moving to Winchester Medical Center as the pharmacist in charge of the operating room satellite pharmacy. While at WMC, his daily responsibilities included working with the acute pain service which gave him the opportunity to collaborate with Dr. George K. Van Osten, who eventually asked Dr. Walker to join his private pain management practice in 2004.
Dr. Walker specializes in the pharmacological management of pain and is responsible for the careful monitoring of all National Spine & Pain Center patients who are being treated with controlled substances. “I see these patients on a monthly basis, at a minimum, so that we can be sure we are maximizing the benefits of these medications while minimizing any associated risks,” he said.
In doing so, Dr. Walker pays close attention to how these medications may affect patients based on their other conditions (including chronic diseases such as COPD, diabetes and renal disease) and other individual variables. He also carefully monitors these patients’ risk for abuse, including any past history of abuse or addiction. If and when significant risk factors for abuse present themselves, patients are required to undergo psychological evaluation and treatment.
Although Dr. Walker has extensive knowledge of opiate management, he is also experienced with the entire scope of medications available today and works closely with National Spine & Pain Center’s physicians and nurse practitioners to ensure all patients’ pain treatment plans are developed with careful consideration of medications prescribed by NSPC as well as the patients’ other health care providers.
“My greatest fulfillment is to hear from our patients that they are functioning at the highest level they can and are enjoying an improved quality of life,” he said. “That tells me they are benefiting from what we are doing.”
Dr. Walker received his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Mississippi in 1989 and completed his doctorate at the Shenandoah University School of Pharmacy in 2005.
In his free time, Walker enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters and tending to his garden.
