James F. DeVoe, MD joined the National Spine & Pain Centers Roanoke, VA office in early July 2018.
Dr. DeVoe brings more than 25 years of interventional pain management experience to NSPC, including extensive expertise in fluoroscopic guided epidural injections, nerve blocks, facet joint injections, radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord stimulation and vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty.
Board certified in anesthesiology and pain management, Dr. DeVoe has previously practiced in South Carolina and Missouri. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps, having served as a general medical officer and flight surgeon.
He was first drawn to the pain management/anesthesia field by the technological challenges of providing safe anesthesia for the increasingly complex surgical procedures of modern medicine. The further challenges and rewards of relieving pain through interventional techniques eventually led him to sub-specialization in pain management. “Over the last 20 years, I have found this a very worthy, and personally very rewarding speciality,” he said.
Dr. DeVoe is excited about the advances in neuromodulatory technology which aims to address a growing number of conditions in the neuropathic pain spectrum. “Ultra-high frequency spinal cord stimulation is promising to be even more effective than standard neuromodulation in treating low back pain as well as limb pain in failed back syndrome,” he said.
When it comes to patient-centered care, Dr. DeVoe believes that effective management of chronic pain must be undertaken with an agreement on therapeutic goals and can only be achieved in an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust. “I truly enjoy interacting with my patients,” he said. “The positive feeling derived from helping someone never gets old.”
When away from the office, you’ll find Dr. DeVoe fly fishing, reading and spending time with his family. He notes his guilty pleasure is watching old movies and episodes of HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones.’
