Cheryl Mejia is a doctor of osteopathic medicine in National Spine & Pain Centers’ Hagerstown, MD, office. She brings to her patients a wealth of knowledge in spine and pain issues, including sports-related injuries, and is experienced in many of the latest healing therapies and approaches to chronic pain management.
Dr. Mejia earned her medical degree from the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York, where as a student, she was drawn to the school’s mission of serving residents of New York’s Harlem neighborhood. She enjoys being a pioneer, which includes being a member of the inaugural class of her medical school, as well as the chief resident of inaugural class of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Nova Southeastern University in South Miami, FL.
Ironically, her path to medicine began behind the wheels of a bike. “I have always been fairly mechanically inclined and used to be a bike mechanic, but I found myself wanting to merge this knowledge with helping people,” she said. “So I began to think about ways that I could use my understanding of mechanics and my hand skills to address problems of anatomy and physiology. I realized that it was my calling to become a mechanic of the body.”
As an avid athlete, fitness and wilderness enthusiast, Dr. Mejia is well-versed in sports injuries. She understands how difficult those injuries can be to those who are used to being physically active, and uses that knowledge to direct their recovery. “Often times I remind my patients that the way they got themselves into pain is also the way they are going to get out it,” she said. “I stress exercise, physical therapy, good diet and an overall healthy lifestyle to help my patients get to the best they can be, whether that means being able to run a marathon or simply going for a walk after dinner without pain.”
Recovery, like the injuries themselves, is unique to each patient, Dr. Mejia said. “So I simply try to partner with each patient to help him or her achieve their best functional level.”
In her free time, Dr. Mejia enjoys biking, hiking, performance-level hip hop dance and exploring new places. In addition to her native English, she is conversant in Spanish and has a basic understanding of French and American Sign Language.
