Barbara Somers began working in pain management in 2007 when she joined the staff of New York Pain Consultants, which became part of National Spine and Pain Centers in 2013. She had just graduated with her master’s in nursing.
Prior to 2007, Somers spent nine years at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, New York. While at Good Samaritan, Somers served as a critical care nurse educator for five years, as an assistant nurse manager in the special care unit for two years, and as a staff nurse for three years.
From 1992-94, Somers worked in the Surgical/Trauma Intensive Care Unit at Stonybrook University Health Sciences Center. Somers’ nursing career started with her four years in the United States Air Force, serving in the following positions:
- Flight nurse, 69th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey
- Field nurse, Abel Home Infusion Services, Great Neck, New York
- Staff nurse, 35-bed medical unit and 27-bed hematology/oncology unit, Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center, San Antonio Texas.
In her personal life, Somers enjoys reading, vacationing at the beach and spending time with her three sons.
