Being in a position where she can have a positive impact and make a difference in peoples’ lives is what Anjela Shrestha loves the most about being a nurse practitioner. She is driven in her job by the satisfaction and the sense of fulfillment that comes from being able to help others and creating meaningful patient-provider relationships.
Anjela joined the National Spine and Pain Centers Roanoke office in September 2018. She has previously worked at Inova Fairfax Hospital as a registered nurse in the intermediate care unit and as a lab tech assistant. She also holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in nursing from George Mason University and Marymount University respectively.
While working as a nurse, Anjela aided a considerable amount of patients through pain management. “Whether acute or chronic, pain can be very debilitating for patients and it affects their quality of life,” she said. “When a treatment helps relieve that pain, it really changes their lives and they are very thankful for it. It is a great profession to be in if you like helping people.”
Anjela approaches medication management (specifically pain medications) by making sure patients have what they need. She utilizes medications with different mechanisms to best reduce pain levels as well as encouraging non-pharmaceutical interventions such as physical therapy, meditation, relaxation techniques, massage therapy and other modalities to improve their overall sense of well-being. “I think with any medications, less is better as long as the medications prescribed are appropriate, effective and safe,” she said.
When discussing care, Anjela believes in two-way communication so the provider acts as a patient advocate and helps each individual make informed decisions regarding their healthcare. “When there is active collaboration and shared decision making between the provider and patient, the patient will also be more likely to take ownership of their healthcare.”
Away from the office, Anjela likes to read, cook, hike, watch movies, and spend time with her family.
