After working in orthopedic surgery for 16 years, Andrea Lynn Burns was drawn to the field of pain management because she saw that surgery is not always the best answer to alleviate discomfort.
She began her pain management journey by helping surgeons with patients that needed non-operative treatments for back pain. Eventually, she gravitated to working full time in pain management by also providing care for the spine and multiple joints such as the knees, shoulders, hips, hands, and feet. “These areas respond very well to injections and (injections) is something I like to do,” she said.
Andrea graduated from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. Four years later, she earned her physician assistant degree from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia.
Before coming to the Pinehurst area, she worked at the Central Arkansas Rehabilitation Hospital in Sherwood, AR, the Fischer-Mangold Emergency Services at the Washington Clinic Urgent Care in Fremont, CA and the Reading Hospital and Medical Center in Pennsylvania.
Andrea was part of the Pinehurst Surgical Clinic, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery from 1995 to 2011. She then spent four years at Pinehurst Anesthesia Associates before moving to Advanced Medical Group in 2015 which merged with the National Spine and Pain Centers in late spring 2018.
Noticing a movement in the pain management industry to shift away from pure medical/opioid management, Andrea aims to encourage her patients to pursue pro-active measures when it comes to improving their overall quality of health such as moderate exercise, weight management and better understanding of their pain. “Moderate activity will not make their condition worse and pain pills are not the only answer for long term management of symptoms,” she said.
