About
Primary Specialties:
Interventional Pain Medicine,
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Since joining National Spine & Pain Centers in 1983, Dr. Friedlis has helped expand the practice into the thriving, nationally recognized leader it is today. He is passionate about the science of pain management and committed to delivering the most effective therapies possible to each of his patients. Throughout his 25+ years of experience he has actively enhanced his knowledge and expertise through continuing education, training and research, a pursuit that has established him in the region as the foremost practitioner of regenerative therapies for musculoskeletal injuries.
In addition to being skilled in conventional interventional techniques, Dr. Friedlis is one of few physicians in the Washington, DC metropolitan area trained to perform Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, and is one of the first doctors in the area to use Stem Cell Therapy for musculoskeletal injuries, in particular knee and hip arthritis and has been showing positive results over the last 2 years. “I decided to bring the Regenexx Protocols into the practice, as I believe that they currently represent the highest state of the art for Stem Cell use. The research is strong and ongoing, which is important for the ongoing development of this science.” He is responsible for introducing these advanced regenerative techniques into the arsenal of treatment options now available at StemCell ARTS, an affiliate of National Spine & Pain Centers.
Dr. Friedlis is passionate about helping people in pain, whether their problem is simple or complex. He believes that “we must always challenge ourselves to stay on the cutting edge of our field. We must evaluate each new treatment option that comes available and gauge if it can help our patients. If it can, then we have a responsibility to do what it takes to bring it into practice, so that our patients can benefit.” His philosophy is to approach each case individually, with the goal of actually curing the patient, as opposed to simply controlling their pain. “Find the cause, then treat for cure” is his motto.
An advocate for global stewardship, Dr. Friedlis coordinated medical mission trips to Central Mexico in 2005, 2007, 2010, and 2012 that were sponsored by the American Association of Orthopedic Medicine and provided much needed pain management services to poor, rural communities. In 2011, he served as Program Director for a new medical outreach program that brought then nonexistent pain management services to Lima, Peru.
Dr. Friedlis was voted among Washingtonian Magazine’s Top Doctors in Pain Management. He is currently serving as Past President of the American Association of Orthopedic Medicine and is chairman of their educational committee, a post he also holds at National Spine & Pain Centers. Dr Friedlis is a nationally recognized expert in pain and is a frequent speaker at national conferences on regenerative therapies, in addition to speaking internationally on musculoskeletal problems at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has been trained and is licensed to perform the Regenexx Family of Stem Cell and Platelet Procedures.
Dr. Friedlis earned his medical degree from Wayne State University and was selected Chief Resident during his residency at Sinai Hospital in Detroit. He is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is a Diplomat of the American Academy of Pain Management and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He maintains several active memberships, including the American Association of Orthopedic Medicine, American Academy of Pain Management, American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, the International Spinal Injection Society and Virginia Medical Society.
Always interested in a challenge, Dr. Friedlis has trekked the Indian Himalayan Mountains, to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro, to base camp of Mt. Everest and the Andean mountains of Peru.
